We are thrilled to share the remarkable success of the Peace in Africa Marathon held in the vibrant city of Durban. Hosted by the Mayibuyi Youth Organization, this annual event has once again brought together people from all walks of life to promote peace, unity, and solidarity across the African continent and beyond.
A Day of Unity and Purpose
The marathon, featuring a 21.1 km half marathon, a 10 km run/walk, and a 5 km fun run, saw over 1800 participants navigate the scenic routes of Durban. Starting from the Kings Park Athletic Stadium, runners enjoyed breathtaking views along the Umgeni River, past the tranquil Blue Lagoon, and the lively Suncoast Casino. The race course highlighted Durban’s iconic landmarks, including the Moses Mabhida Soccer Stadium, creating an unforgettable experience for all involved.
Promoting Peace and Social Cohesion
The Peace in Africa Marathon is more than just a race. It is a powerful platform for advocating against xenophobia, racism, tribalism, and cultural discrimination. This year’s event focused on addressing the root causes of unrest in KwaZulu-Natal, promoting peace between Ukraine and Russia, and fostering a sense of community and understanding among diverse cultures.
We are incredibly grateful for the support of our partners, including Discovery Vitality, who helped make this event a resounding success. Their contribution, along with the dedication of our volunteers and participants, played a crucial role in spreading our message of peace and unity.
Highlights and Memories
The energy and enthusiasm of the runners were palpable as they crossed the finish line at the Kings Park Athletic Stadium. The event was filled with inspiring moments, from the determined strides of seasoned athletes to the joyful participation of families and children in the fun run.
One of the standout features of the marathon was the awarding of Peace Medals and Solly-M Online vouchers to outstanding participants, recognizing their commitment to the cause. Additionally, Discovery Vitality points were awarded, adding an extra layer of motivation for participants to stay active and healthy.
Looking Forward
As we reflect on this year’s marathon, we are already looking forward to next year’s event. The Peace in Africa Marathon is not just an annual race; it is a movement that continues to grow, bringing people together in the spirit of peace and unity.
